Resident Report
August 13, 2002 RSNJ Executive Committee Meeting

Over the last few weeks, we have been working towards forming a Resident Physician Section within the RSNJ. I want to thank Drs. Tedeschi and DiMarcangelo and also Drs. Amorosa and Graziano, our resident liaisons, for their active support and encouragement towards this initiative.

The state of New Jersey currently has 8 residency programs and a few fellowship programs, comprising over 100 radiology residents and fellows, so there certainly is a strong need to have a RPS within the RSNJ.

I have talked informally to radiology residents in different programs over the last few weeks regarding the resident section, and have had a very positive response. I will be writing individually to various radiology residency program directors and chief residents in New Jersey to get their support and also to promote this initiative among all residents. These letters will be mailed after the radiology written boards around the 12th of September, so that the chief residents and rest of the house staff are relatively more available. They shall also receive promotional materials and resident membership forms from the ACR. Each program will nominate one resident to serve as a liaison with the resident section, and also serve as part of the governing council of the RPS.

We are also in the process of making a database of all current radiology residents and fellows in New Jersey, which will be updated annually.

Another major area of activity now is making an interactive resident website as part of the RSNJ website which will deal with issues pertinent to residents, and also educational opportunities, communication and program links among other things.

In forming this section we are trying to incorporate various ideas and positive features of some of the more successfully run resident sections in the country, notably those of Massachusetts, New York, Michigan and Florida,

There are a lot of issues unique to residents as a group, which a well functioning resident section should be able to address, with the support of the state radiological society. We are working on various mechanisms to heighten resident participation within the RPS, RSNJ and the ACR.

Any ideas and suggestions towards this initiative are very welcome.

Thank you.
